Success & the City

Day 4: Favorite quote (from a person, from a book, etc) and why you love it.

“Some people are settling down, some are settling, and some people refuse to settle for anything less than butterflies.”  –Carrie Bradshaw

Sure, I could have taken this opportunity to dazzle you all with a paragraph quote from some book I read in high school, but instead I decided to go with this lovely quote by Carrie Bradshaw, of Sex and the City. When I first heard Carrie say these words at the end of Season 5, Episode 8, I realized she had found a way to articulate exactly what I noticed as I prepared to leave high school and my hometown bubble a couple years ago.

More and more each year of your life, there will be people settling down– moving home, starting families, and getting in touch with “reality” after college. There will also be people settling– accepting whatever job they can get, staying in a bad relationship because they’re too afraid to be on their own, and giving up on dreams they’ve had since childhood. However, there will always, ALWAYS be people who refuse to settle for anything less than butterflies. Now I’m sure that Carrie probably only meant butterflies relating to love, but I think that it can be applied to all areas of life. Find a way to make it to your dream school. Study what YOU want to study, not what someone told you you “should” do. Join a club or organization and meet people who will teach you things professors can’t. Study abroad. Don’t be afraid to leave home, at least for a little while. Go after that ideal job in a city where you know no one. Give your heart to someone who knows what they have when they have you, and vice versa.

I’m not saying you should never be content to settle down eventually, but first make sure it’s the right time, and wherever you are, it’s exactly where you want to be and who you want to be with. No matter how old you get, the satisfaction of a job well done and the thrill of success should always excite you, however you define it.
